Here is something you older folk may have heard stories about. I well recall my dad telling me about their activities prior to the second world war when things were very tough and folk could not afford to buy coal. No problems the local lads would wait on the coal train to exit the MacGregor tunnel (not longer there) travelling north and place one brake on the wagon and this slowed the train down, then the lads would climb on-board then start throwing the coal from the wagons. On some occasions the train had to stop and the guard would then have to release the brakes. The offenders were well hidden by then and after the train had gone the coal was bagged and everyone in the bay received a share. Robin Hood in the bay?
