Hispano Heritage Day at the Fort! June 28, 10:00 – 4:00 Please come help us celebrate this wonderful culture and part of our regional history! Please check out the amazing talent we have coming to help us learn and appreciate this rich heritage: Dr. Lorenzo Trujillo: Will be performing with his large ensemble and teaching traditional dances as well as giving a presentation on Traditional Hispanic Weddings (in the Capps Building) Lorenzo Trujillo is the director of the Southwest Musicians. He was awarded the 1996 Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, acknowledging his work as a folk violinist, guitarist, and vocalist, among his other accomplishments as a musician, ethnic dancer, folklorist, arts administrator, and culture bearer for approximately four decades. He was awarded funding from the National Endowment for the Arts as a performing artist in 1976. In 2004, he was awarded the Hilos Culturales Distinguished Traditional Folk Artist Premio for his lifetime contributions to the traditional Hispanic traditions of Southern Colorado and New Mexico. Dr. Trujillo has presented thousands of concerts, lecture demonstrations, and has published extensively in the area of traditional music and dance of the Southwest United States over the past 40 years. He has recorded and performed for television, radio and on numerous CDs. In 2009, he was inducted into the Colorado Chicano Music Hall of Fame. His most popular CD is: The Golden Age of the Southwest: From 1840 to Hollywood. Dr. Deborah Martinez-Martinez: traditional dying of wool with cochineal bugs Author, living history presenter, historian and staff at El Pueblo History Museum, will be demonstrating traditional dying techniques as well as have her books, cards, and dye kits for sale. Ruben Archuleta: retired military, secret service, police chief, Ruben will have books and art for sale as well as give a presentation on Penitentes. He is the author of four books, numerous magazine articles, artist, speaker, and a specialist on Penitentes. Jose Esquibel: Master Santero, Jose carves on site and explains his art form and history. Esquibel is an alumnus of Regis University. He grew up in Littleton and Englewood to parents from Rociada, New Mexico. Growing up in a large family with 12 brothers and sisters, nine of whom were sisters, Esquibel chuckles and says, because of this, he is a feminist. Attending Georgetown for his master’s degree, Esquibel was a teacher before he discovered an additional career path. Esquibel has made around 3,000 santos over the years displaying them in churches, exhibits, festivals, museums, and in collectors’ homes Ronn Miera: Santero, will be on hand to show and sell his beautiful carvings and works. He has shown his amazing work in such prestigious places as the O’Sullivan Art Center, Chicano Humanities Gallery. Teresa May King Duran: Teresa Duran is a fifth generation Coloradoan and her family can be traced to the early settlements of New Mexico. Teresa has shown her work at various museums, universities, churches and galleries and she has won various awards. Her artwork was selected to market the 1994 and 2011, “Chili Harvest Festival,” in Denver and the 1997, “Colorado Santeros,” exhibit at Regis University. Teresa was juried into the Spanish Market in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2010. Gary Bellah: traditional straw inlay artist will return with his beautiful and intricate, historic art form. Dave Steffan: our local resident historian and go-to guy, ‘Dobe Dave’ will again be giving demonstrations and hands-on adobe fun! Come play in the mud! El Fandango Dancers: our local youth will perform their beautiful dances in the plaza at 2:00! Along with all this learning, please bring your best SALSA for the contest!! Prize will be award the winner!! The event is free, although donations are adored and have proven to be good for your health!
