Here is the Russell House as it appeared in 1927. The man on the porch is R.B. Hayes-May. The boy is Morland Russell, grandfather of Chuck Kays and Jason Kays. The white posts in the modern picture mark the wartime footprint of the house. There was an L on the back that had been removed long before 1927. This house served as General Alexander M. McCooks (Commander of US 1st Corps) Headquarters during the Battle of Perryville. It was briefly captured by General Sterling A.M. Woods Brigade, before being retaken by Colonel Michael Goodings Brigade - reinforcements from US III Corps almost at dark. The Russell House was burned by vandals on (or near) the 100th anniversary of the battle.
