Here is the comment from the Indigenous Environmental Network: Whoooa.. What the Heck just happened? Alaska Senator Murkowski pulls out a Tsimshian club and uses it as her gavel for Senate Committee write-up hearing on the KXL pipeline bill! After she tells her story -- with the microphone still on --- says Kind of evil looking isnt it? Colonial Power Symbolism at its best. #NoKXL #Decolonize #NoTarSands Lisa Murkowski comes from a long line of Alaskans who have exploited Alaska Natives. This is just awful. She should be shamed. Blindingly and intentionally manipulative. I call foul. When I worked for a law firm representing the Alaska Natives as a plaintiff group -- I am not an attorney, I was the legislative specialist -- we had a markup about the damage done to the Alaska natives as a plaintiff group in the Exxon Valdez spill. The details dont matter, but the reaction of the Alaska delegation does, and still does. The night before markup I got a call from a Senate staff person, for Murkowski pere and Don Young, still in the House. The message was: The wheels fell off the cart. The Alaska delegation doesnt want to send a message to the world that the resource is tainted. So it was, and so this Alaska delegation, populated by family Murkowski, will still lie and exploit if it suits their agenda. This pisses me off more than I can say. Thomas Berger, in his seminal piece Village Journey, states that if someone interrupts the storyteller, the storyteller will die. Well, I think it is time someone interrupts this storyteller.
