Here is the first in a series of weekly devotionals that well be posting throughout our study in Hebrews. If you havent already, take some time to review Sundays message, and the hope it gives us each day. Week One: Hebrews 1:1-4 “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.” As I scan the selection of devotionals at popular Christian book stores, I am often disappointed with what I find. Many of these books are filled with cherry-picked verses of scripture and are accompanied by a watered-down inspirational gleaning. I long for the day Christians understand that only in contemplating the Gospel will we ever find our daily strength and will to live as Christ’s people. I encourage you: do not shy away from passages of scripture that seem difficult. The Holy Spirit living in us is ultimately worth more than an education from a human institution when it comes to discerning the meaning of God’s word. To be sure, those things are helpful, and allow us access to deeper understanding, but they cannot replace God dwelling in us. While parts of his will may not be revealed to us, remember it is not his intention to baffle and confuse us regarding his written word. This is seen in this week’s passage. While we may wonder sometimes at what God says, it is important to worship him as a God who is not silent. He does not leave us to wander aimlessly in our sin, as the writer of Hebrews acknowledges. First, he spoke to his people through prophets, human agents chosen as the go-between for men and God. Then, in a glorious gesture of his love for his bride and his desire for us to know him, he sent us Christ, the Word made flesh, the very radiance of the glory of God, to dwell among us and teach us about the Father. Church, dwell on this until it stirs your affections for Jesus. Your Father in heaven is not silent, nor is he distant. He is no deist god who makes the world and then walks away. He is the only God who chases after us, fiercely pursuing our stubborn hearts even as we turn our backs and run. I pray this week that this truth frees, comforts, and strengthens you. - CP
