The Department of Environmental Affairs will be hosting three public meetings next week on possible Sharks Attack Mitigation Measures in Port St Johns for the following areas; Port St Johns - 12 November 2014, Durban - 13 November 2014 and East London -14 November 2014. These meetings should be seen in the context of Government Gazette (No. 37999) published on 19 September 2014 calling for the public to make comments on sharks mitigation measures for shark attacks on the beaches of Port St Johns. There have been ten shark attacks at Port St Johns beaches between March 2004 and March 2014, eight fatal, which makes it the most dangerous area regarding shark attacks in the world. The local municipality engaged the Department to help seek and facilitate solutions, including the deployment of Shark nets at Second Beach Port St Johns. The department invited public comments as there are different opinions between those who perceive safety in the deployment of shark nets, and those who feel that the biodiversity costs, including protected marine species, would be high without any guarantees that swimming would be totally safe. There are already various options that could be explored to address human safety, including but not limited to: Tidal pools and access to them, improved life saver services a boat launching facility, improved signage and communication, other established methods of reducing the presence of large dangerous sharks in the area (such as baited drumlines), as well experimental barriers based on recent research. Some of these the department is already in the process of exploring them or other institutions institution conducting various investigations on them. Organisations or individuals are invited to attend these meetings as scheduled below: Date: 12 November 2014 Venue: Port St Johns Town Hall, Port St Johns Time: 10:00 to 13:00 Date: 13 November 2014 Venue: Newlands East Community Hall, Durban Time: 10:00 to 13:00 Date: 14 November 2014 Venue: Orient Theatre, Eat London Time: 10:00 to 13:00 Kind regards MONDE MAYEKISO (PhD) DEPUTY DIRECTOR-GENERAL: OCEANS AND COASTS DATE:
