Here is the reason why hapu / whanau need to oppose any recommendation and proposal from the Local Government Commission to merge Northlands 3 District and Regional Councils into one Unitary Authority. Because here is the evidence how District and Regional Councils go about severing Maori tenure titles for them to be delete, extinguished, and ultimately illegally confiscated through a Crown process. This proves that we have had a history of government employees either directly under councils or agencies past and present who have been part of a consistent practice of severing Maori titles and partitioning them in isolation. The current Treaty Settlement process will only bring down the curtain of one Unitary Authority to carry on this malpractice.
