Here is the second draft of the villanelle. It is getting better -- but now I must clean the kitchen! One Hundred Years For Hazleton City Hall At the city’s heart, stands a house of laws’ invention. Today, generations revel alive in gray stone. Weather on through years of war and coal’s ascension. The ghosts of shattered miners bring their bones to attention To balance the scales of another plain-speaking day. At the city’s heart, stands a house of laws’ invention. City Hall, of many rooms: peace is still the best intention. Only to return, from this fortress we have gone worlds away. Weather on through years of war and coal’s ascension. TV lights make second suns, as the he world streams here for love or contention. Into digital history, this building has grown in stone. At the city’s heart, stands a house of laws’ invention. Some would tear down such structures for the gloss of reinvention. But corridors whisper a hard-mined, soldiered epoch, never to clone. Weather on through years of war and coal’s ascension. One day, this concrete fortress will collect some geological pension, as into the heavens, anthracite justice is sewn. At the city’s heart, stands a house of laws’ invention. Weather on through years of war and coal’s ascension. Maria Jacketti This poem is written as villanelle, and incorporates complex end rhyme and internal rhymes. drmariawu@msn 570-459-5615
