Here is the statement written on behalf of Neil Kipling we are sharing - via Stokoe Media - with media outlets and interested parties throughout Yorkshire and further afield... its easily tweakable as we go along too: So what’s this Whitby to York rail link campaign all about? Well take five minutes to read on… Hello, my name is Neil Kipling. I’m a Whitby man by birth and passionate about my home town, its heritage and its future. On August 28th, I created a Facebook group calling for the reinstatement of the Whitby to York rail link. In these first early days we already have more than 700 members. A Twitter account has also been set up – you’ll find us at @WhitbyLink – we’ve already more than 50 followers. Next came our online petition too, entitled ‘Reinstate the Whitby to York raillink. 6 miles of track!’ – the following link will take you directly to it: https://change.org/p/secretary-of-state-for-transport-reinstate-the-whitby-to-york-raillink-6-miles-of-track?recruiter=149749870&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=share_email_responsive Sufficient to say, people all over the country, as well as abroad, have started signing it and we have already topped 600 signatures including one from Alex Thomson, chief correspondent and presenter of Channel 4 News. We now also have our own website – courtesy of Neil Thaler – with more details of the project. Log on to: jlensmeister.co.uk/wmyr/ While being aware of the concerns of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway have on this issue, we as a group feel the two could work together in perfect harmony. It would mean double tracking the Pickering to Grosmont section of the line. The other minor obstacle is the linking of Pickering station to just past the Pickering/Malton road. With the advent of HS2 what better time to improve travel links for, not just Whitby but, the whole of North Yorkshire as a whole? Imagine landing at Manchester Airport and facing the long journey home? What if you were able to board a train at said airport, change at Rillington Junction and continue home to the Esk Valley and Whitby? Heathrow to Whitby in just three trains? Bram Stoker travelled the track we want to reinstate back in 1890 when he travelled to the seaside… the rest is history. The economical and environmental benefits are endless and far reaching, with sustainable growth for future generations! Quite simply, “I don’t want to dismiss politicians’ input but this has got to be a decision for the people, campaigned for by the people and made successful by the people.” Many newspapers, radio stations and other media outlets have been contacted so watch this space. There will be regular updates on our website and Facebook and Twitter feeds as well as through Stokoe Media too so keep in touch with us with your ideas, pictures, comments and useful information.
