Here is the vets report from their game on 27th September: Boro vets continued their winning start to the season with an ultimately comfortable victory against Poly Strollers which saw the team record their first clean sheet of the season, a fitting birthday present to Boro legend Richard Plumtree the vets goalkeeper. With two goals in each half the only downer on the game was that we did not score more goals given our territorial dominance. This was down to a combination of poor finishing yours truly included as well as wrong decisions being taken when other players were better placed. Having said that the goals we did score were quality & for once the goals were spread around showing that we have a goal scoring threat all over the park. Inevitably though our first goal was scored by vets goal machine John Atkinson who registered his tenth goal of the season in only his fourth game - a good move down the left involving Stevenson & Purvis saw the ball moved to Westcott who floated a cross over the last defenders head where Atko collected the ball & passed it into the far corner. Chris Purvis making his first start of the season was involved in the second goal when his wicked in swinging corner was glanced home by Jonny Hillman who was also making his first appearance of the season. There was some debate after the game as to whether this should have been marked down as an own goal but the dubious goals committee gave the goal to Hillman. Chances that we missed in the first half - JD put through but unable to beat the keeper, a couple more corners accurately delivered by Purvis but not finished. At the other end despite Poly playing three up they could rarely find a way through the defence of Axelson, Sweeney, Dulley & Stevenson & when they did Plum was able to clean up. Into the second half with Laker on for Sweeney & Cadogan on for Hillman Boro again dominated possession but again did not score the goals that our play deserved. New boy Phil Westcott got our third after Cadogan & Atkinson combined on the right & Atkos deep cross was headed home - top effort considering the ball was behind Phil & he stretched to make it but headed it back across the goalie who could not keep it out. Before being replaced by Sweeney, Rob Cormack had a shot over & then gently passed back to their keeper in his efforts to get on the score sheet. I then came on for Purvis for a twenty minute cameo which could have seen me amongst the goals, with a bit of luck - first Westcott beat the offside trap & bearing down on the keeper had the option of shooting or squaring the ball to yours truly for a tap in. Bad choice & as he was told after the game he could be spending a lot on the bench!! To be fair about five minutes later having dropped deep he did thread a great through ball for me to latch onto but I could not dink the ball over the keeper. Two chances for someone whos has not netted in eight seasons so I will be in my sixties before those sort of opportunities present themselves to me again. Sweeney then showed us all how it was done - Laker won a header that was blocked on the edge of the six yard box but Westcott squared it to Sweeney who squeezed it home to at least give the shoreline some reflection of our dominance. Man of the match was Atko & thanks to Callum Laker for coming to watch as well as providing the post match entertainment by taking the p1ss out of Rob with his concise summary of his performance - rubbish.
