Here is the week in review with Dixie Huff. Prior to Monday - TopicsExpress

Here is the week in review with Dixie Huff. Prior to Monday 10/21. Dixie had been retaining fluid on her right lung cavity to the point of having to have 2.2 L drained off every 2-3 days. The fluid retention was due to her need for a liver transplant. Monday. We saw her Dr. in Springfield who basically said Ive done everything I know to reduce the fluid and called the liver specialist with Barnes. Tuesday. I worked and got ready to be gone. Wednesday. Traveled to St. Louis. Visited with liver team who admitted her to Barnes Jewish Hospital. They scanned her and the waiting began...... Thursday. Waiting continued. Friday. Early day of waiting began. 7:00 pm she went into surgery for a reevaluation of her TIPS or liver bypass that she got back in July. The summary was that the TIPS is doing what it should do. Back to her room at 9:30 pm. Saturday. Just spoke with the liver specialist and they feel that the TIPS will still kick in and start to work yet. Basically, it is supposed to cause the body to allow the fluid to pass and not back up in her system. So now the plan is that they will put in a drain into the lung cavity on Monday and release her on Tuesday. The drain will allow her to drain the fluid from the lung cavity (they say anyone can be trained to do it! Oh boy, thats me) and not have to have taps. He said that eventually the TIPS will kick in and fluid retention will decrease and the drain will come out. A positive side note is that Dixies MELD score which determines your position on the liver transplant list is now at a 19. It was a 15 and the average transplant occurs with a score of 25. The specialist told us this morning that with her blood type hers would occur in the high twentys. So, that is the latest! Thanks to everyone for all of the support! This would be a much tougher road to walk without it! Jeff
