Here is what I know about the impending withdrawal of our Guard troops from the border after being on the phone all morning. DPS Troopers around the state will be asked to work 10 hour days to make up for the lost Guard troops. Additional cameras will be purchased. Game Wardens will continue to be deployed. This decisions was forced because our leadership did not do the work to find the additional funds to sustain the Guard deployment AND pay for overtime for DPS. We should not have put our law enforcement and troops in that position. Law enforcement is telling me that even now with 1000 Guard deployed and extra DPS troops the BORDER IS NOT SECURE. We are only covering a small portion of the miles of the border with our surge efforts. We need additional DPS overtime and troopers hired, more technology (cameras and air) AND MORE Guard troops NOT FEWER. The timing of this action with Pres Obamas decision to legalize millions couldnt be worse. The potential for a mass influx of illegals is very real. We need more resources of the border. FASTER PLEASE!
