Here is what I wrote in the comment section in response to an article in the LA Times entitled "First World Problem: Vegans Want Pumpkin Spice Lattes too" (discussions.latimes/20/lanews/la-dd-starbucks-vegan-pumpkin-spice-latte-20130912/10): Ironically, though the author of this article is attempting to trivialize the issue of availability of vegan foods as a "first world problem," the reality is that vegan choices help alleviate "third world problems" including global hunger and climate change. 12 pounds of grain are required to produce one pound of grain-fed beef. Much of the corn, wheat and soy grown in this country is fed to cows and other animals destined for slaughter (and that includes dairy cows - they are typically slaughtered by their fifth birthday because of declining milk production making them less profitable to keep around). Greenhouse gas emissions from farmed animals is a leading contributor to manmade greenhouse gas production, moreso than all of transportation combined. Meanwhile close to a billion people suffer from malnutrition or starvation. Petitioning for a vegan latte might seem unimportant to someone not familiar with the extreme cruelty to animals and exploitation of both people and animals that the meat and dairy industries perpetuate, in addition to taking a toll on human health and the planet. To learn more about the connection between animal-heavy diets and world hunger, awellfedworld.org/ is a worthwhile resource.
