Here it is: the Solar Impulse 2 with its 72-meter wingspan exceeding that of a Boeing 747, the sleek fuselage, the one-man cockpit and a total weight of just 2.3 metric tons was unveiled in Switzerland. Large portions of the structure are covered with solar cells, 17,248 of them to be exact. This aircraft takes up on the challenge to do the first around-the-world flight without fuel in 2015. Bayer MaterialScience has been involved in the Solar Impulse project for exactly four years now, contributing crucial innovative products and solutions that include a novel, extremely high-performance insulating material for the cockpit and the batteries.
