Here, the Interior, which is something like Being, tears and shreds the surface of the Exterior, which is something like Becoming, and animates it, like gusts of cold air from the nearby sea; it keeps the visible world dancing, in perpetual frenzy. And the Exterior continually readjusts itself, keeping the world from flying apart. Interspecificity is not easy. His Bathers seem to be reaching toward the rocks, the trees, desiring to become what they see, chanting with erotic intensity, “I am that tree. I am that rock. I am that tree. I am that rock.” And yet they cannot be; nor can the painting be the landscape, the intentional object toward which it, too, seems to be longing and which it seems to be touchingly imitating, here in this makeshift room, working with the deft and willful self-hypnosis of a method actor, with a soulful, visceral urge to be about . . . something.
