Here was my comment on this post: Just my two cents: I suspect why its okay for minority groups to declare they are proud, but not white Americans -- is because of the history of white European/Americans actively attacking, enslaving and destroying these groups. They didnt do this to us, we did it to them. American whites were the overlord and fulfilling manifest destiny. Thus, when a white American says he or she is proud to be a white person -- the unjustices of the past are brought up mentally in a way that doesnt happen when minority groups say they are proud. Also -- just an interesting tidbit: White Europeans find it quite curious that Americans declare they are proud to be American. It is an accident of birth, not something we have achieved (for the most part). The Dutch, Germans, British, etc dont typically say things like this. Minority groups that have been subjected to ostracism by the majority have a liberty to say they are proud (despite persecution) to be the way they are. The majority population, who committed the persecution, just doesnt have the same liberty. Again, just my opinion -- and we all know what an opinion is worth.
