Here we are in Rio de Janeiro, staying at a very upmarket hotel( Copacabana Palice) right on the beachfront. Last night our group had a very interesting dinner at Marius Restaurant, buffet starters of soups, salads and heaps of various seafood, mains were continual serves of beef, spareribs, lamb, seafood, chicken etc. served at the table. Of course a great buffet selection of desserts!! The most interesting aspect of this restaurant was the collection of hundreds of objects of Art Deco, on the walls and hanging from the ceiling-indescribable!! The toilets where also masterpieces of decoration, many photos taken! The owner is a very eccentric male, whom we met. Today has been full on with adventures but very enjoyable. First a train ride up to Corcovado( Hunchback Mountain), to view the statue of Christ The Redeemer( 30 metres high and arms stretch 28 metres wide). Fantastic views over areas of Rio city even though a little cloud cover. Next to Rios St.Sebastian Cathedral, ultra modern, conical shaped building with four 64 metre rectilinear stained glass windows( red, green, blue and yellow), only seen internally and a standing capacity of 20,000 people! Next a short walk to our lunch destination, a place called Confeitaria Colombo, established in 1894. Magnificent venue, our buffet lunch was served on the top floor, ground floor had many display cabinets of varying interests, coffee counters, pastry, homemade biscuits etc. A historic and artistic building, stained glass ceiling dome, Jacaranda furniture and Belgian mirrors are all original. Next on two cable car rides to Sugar Loaf Mountain, unfortunately the cloud cover prevented us from viewing the city and beach areas below! Next to Ipanema Beach where we all had a coconut and drank the milk through a straw as one does in Rio!! Tonight a few of our group ate dinner at an Italian Restaurant a few doors from our hotel, on Copacabana Beach, met a table of Canadians next to us so ended up a very noisy night, food great too! Tomorrow we have a tour to the Favelas(term for slum or shanty town in Brazil), located mainly on the higher areas on the mountain sides above the city! 💤💤💤
