Here we go.... Lilly just came into my room. She crawled into my bed and just the warmth coming from her woke me up. She had a fever of 101 but, she felt much warmer. Usually, I refuse to give tylenol until the kids are at 102.7. Her core seemed to be higher. I checked her ears... no redness. She also has a stomach ache, headache, cough, runny nose, sore throat, chills, she is thirsty, and her glands are swollen. Yep, the flu. So, after 1 dose of tylenol and a ten minute wait the fever was down and the headache at bay.... for now. Unless, her symptoms get out of control I refuse to take a child to the doctor. There is not a concern for anti-biotics. I want parents to realize that your child has an immune system. Let it do its job. I worked at a hospital for a long time. Do not go around demanding anti-biotics or an anti-viral i.e.) tamiflu. It will not help. It can weaken their immune system and can cause them to be more susceptible to an actual infection. I know it sucks when children become ill but, you have to tough it out. I gave all 3 kids a spoonful of honey sprinkled with cinnamon before bed time. I am almost convinced to slice an onion and put it in the kids room. Try essential oils, humidifiers, Vicks vapor rub, chicken soup, jell-o, and REMEMBER- stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids. I do not care if they are refusing. Get a syringe, fill it with water, and place it in their cheek. There is nothing worse then a sick dehydrated child. Ever get a quick needle stick on a dehydrated, kid? I think arguing/ forcing fluids is better then an ER trip and all of the BS over dehydration. Yet, sometimes dehydration cannot be helped. So, with the icky bugs running a muck always have your children wash their hands and stay hydrated. Do not over medicate or under medicate. Your child will thank you later for a healthy immune system.
