Here you get a feel of what it was like moments before the setting - TopicsExpress

Here you get a feel of what it was like moments before the setting sun came into the frame during the Manhattan-henge on Friday evening. Rush hour traffic was streaming all around us yet people didnt care. At first the crowd would rush forward when the light turned green for pedestrians but as the sun inched closer to centering itself in the street, a frenzy took over and people began to stay put on the road daring cars to hit them. Of course most drivers had no idea what was going on and started leaning on their horns. A few people in the crowd began cheering and yelling enough to actually drown out the sounds of the horns. I have never seen anything like it. Fortunately there was no large police presence and for a few moments the people basically took over one of the busiest streets in the city. There was a moment of spontaneous cheering and clapping from everyone as the sun centered itself down 42nd St. Unfortunately at one point a person, who wasnt even driving a car, took it upon himself to start screaming at the crowd and trying to move them off the street. From the tone of his voice it was clear that he sounded on the edge of a complete breakdown. This was a mystery to us because it was clear he wasnt a driver or passenger in any of the cars and even the drivers in the cars themselves had given up leaning on their horns at this point and decided to take in the moment with the rest of the crowd. A few moments after this guy came close to a mental breakdown, police arrived and began to move people off the streets and I could see in their faces that even they were getting wary of the screaming nutcase. However the moment was lost and soon the New Yorkers went back into their protective shells and everyone faded into the anonymous bustle of a summer evenings rush to get to their destinations.
