Heres Ben Selvins Orchestra performing Betty (https://youtube/watch?v=ZSAGuxQcuhA) with Earl Olivers growling trumpet & Red Nicholss bouncy cornet (according to Stephen Hester) among the personnel. Johnson & Shirley shows a personnel that included Oliver & Charles Rocco on trumpets, Frank Zimmock on trombone, Thomas/Tom Spatty Timothy & Sammy Schwemmer on alto & tenor saxes doubling on clarinet & with Timothy on his arranging duties, Joe Percoraro on banjo doubling on tenor sax, Harry Merkurs piano, Blackie (whose real name is unknown) on string bass & Ken(neth) Whitmer on drums doubling on alto sax (note that all or some (& i mean all or some) of the musicians mentioned could have been present on the Ben Selvin recordings that he did from March 4 from 1926 to June 25 from 1926) that could be on this record with Nichols replacing Charles Rocco, who went to England to play on the Savoy Orpheans & Oliver is certainly present on this side along with Nichols. Another personnel used on this session is similar but with Sammy Lewis on trombone, Larry Abbott & another man (Schwemmer or Timothy) on alto saxes doubling on clarinets, Hymie Wolfsons tenor sax doubling on clarinet, John Cali on banjo, Hank Stern on tuba & Selvins longtime sideman & founding member Milton Sands on drums that could have been used on this side (the alto sax lead sounds a little bit like Abbott). Neverthless, this side was cut on April 15 from 1926 in New York & originally issued on Brunswick 3172 (Selvin had another session on that same date for the Plaza group of labels (titles were Hi-Ho The Merrio! & Im Lonely Without You (both with vocal refrain from Arthur Hall)), which was Selvins last session for Plaza). Selvin was playing at the Café de Paris at the time this side was made & he also cut this tune 9 days before for Harmony (April 7 from 1926) with Oliver & Nichols also present on that version alongside Sammy Lewis on trombone, Larry Abbott on alto sax doubling on clarinet, Hymie Wolfsons tenor sax doubling on clarinet, possibly William Covington Bill Perry on piano, John Cali on banjo, Hank Stern on tuba & Selvins longtime sideman & founding member Milton Sands on drums according also to Johnson & Shirleys American Dance Bands on Record & Film. I wonder what personnel was used on this side? By the way, have fun with it!
