Heres Bobs story about our Tamarindo show: Song Travelin 4.30.14: Monkey La La – A place just made for Sound Traveler Tamarindo isnt Myrtle Beach, though some of its glitz and bustle might summon the comparison. After all, nowhere in Costa Rica is really that much like anywhere in the USA. For example, howler monkeys and iguanas are often visible from the streets of Tamarindo – a sight absent from any town in North America. But for a brief time, Sound Traveler too could be seen in town, and on one night Sound Traveler could also be heard from the interior of Monkey La La in the hotel known as Pasatiempo. Patty and I talked to couple of musicians hosting a music jam at the Monkey La La, and we asked if we could be put on the schedule to perform. These musicians were really quite good, and after their opening set they handed the stage over to us. As usual, we launched into our initial song, and we were met with enthusiastic applause. Encouraged, we continued playing as audience members cheered us on. We played about ten songs before surrendering the stage to the next band. While performing at the jam, we met several excellent musicians, and two of them were incredible. We had actually heard Jesse Bishop and Joe Hrbek playing at the Playa Langosto Beach Club the previous night. Their group is called the Hot Mangoes Jazz Duo. Their music includes wide-ranging eclectic jazz with familiar tunes, nice vocals, and superb work on sax and guitar. We left talking about what a great job they had done. Then we got a chance to play with them at the Monkey La La. In fact, Patty was asked to play trumpet alongside Joe on sax. After a little adjustment time, the mix became magic. The Hot Mangoes plus Patty delivered “Misty” with soul and grace, blending sax, trumpet, and guitar in sensuous combination. Patty and I finished the evening playing back-up on guitar, harmonica, and drum as another musician, Jim, led all of us in a blues potpourri. One audience member, Dorothy, a new Tamarindo resident formerly from Texas, talked with us for quite a while hoping to get us to return for future shows in Tamarindo. She knows many musicians in the area and hopes to make a return visit for us both possible and profitable. Once again, we had played Costa Rica, and once more the results were encouraging. Who knows, a return trip might happen – at least now we know where to start, and we know that Sound Traveler sound will travel. Watch out, world!
