Heres Why Microsoft Can Become A Top Android Company! Nokia X is only the tip of the iceberg for Microsoft-Android... Microsoft-Nokia combo pitching in for Android might be surprising to many, however, ask the folks back at Microsoft and theyll tell you: its quite a smart move indeed! With the growing popularity of Android, it was only a matter of time before Microsoft went ahead to cash on the tremendous opportunity, i.e. Android! The question is can Microsoft become a top Android smartphone company? Here are five reasons that may make Microsoft a major Android player! 1. Microsoft already makes major profits from Android It is estimated that Microsoft may have made almost $3.4 billion in 2013 from Android sales through its various patent agreements. Now, if you consider Microsofts entertainment and devices division (EDD) for instance, the revenue figures might not be very encouraging. However, with Microsoft acquiring Nokia, the multinational could well make ten times more money courtesy Android smartphones. What will further add to its success is the fact that unlike other Android competitors, Microsoft wont have to pay for its own patent fees so the margin of profit will of course be much higher. 2. Android already owns the market According to IDCs latest fourth-quarter ranking, Android holds more than 78 per cent of the worldwide smartphone market. When compared to iOS, Android occupies 95 per cent of the market share. Do we really need to quote the state of Windows Phones? They have been down in the dumps for only God knows when. Therefore Microsoft going all out pitching for Android wont be much of a surprise. And when it does, the world would be watching! 3. MS-Android has unique advantages over its competitors In order to stay ahead of competition, Android device makers are doing everything (while some of them might be decent, others are downright ridiculous!). For instance, they resort to adding bloatware that we are not very fond of personally, and design their own custom interface, which surprisingly doesnt look all the way any different from others in the market. Why bother, we say! Now, in case of Microsoft, they are known to offer real software-as-a-service (SaaS) and infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) alternatives to Googles offerings. To sum it up, Microsoft has Outlook instead of Gmail, Office 365 instead of Google Docs and OneDrive instead of Google Drive. 4. Lower development costs If ever a Windows Phone 9 will be in the reckoning, the price to build the same will, well lets just say it would eventually be quite an investment. Looking at the plight of Windows 8 Phone, we dont see Microsoft going for the big plunge anytime soon. However, with Android, the company will have to spend frankly nothing. Google along with other open-source developers, will be picking up the tab and build the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). 5. More apps, more developers Well if we compare the number of developers and existing applications in the case of Android and Microsoft, (seriously, why are we even doing this?) theres a humongous difference. While the Google Play store already has over one million apps and is still counting, Windows Phone just recently crossed over 200,000 apps mark. This means there are quite a lot of Android developers out there. Microsoft just needs to channel them for their own good.
