Heres a close-up of the original throne chair that was commissioned by King Kamehameha III after he moved the capital from Lahaina to Honolulu in 1845 and set up residence in the original palace - then called Hanaialoia (Kamehameha V would later re-name it Iolani). The chair was made by a local German cabinet maker, Christian LaFrenz, out of koa wood in 1847. This throne chair was passed to each succeeding ruler until Kalakaua ordered a pair of gilded thrones in the gothic-revival style from Boston to be placed in the new Iolani Palace. The King then moved the original throne chair to the Gold Room, where it is on display today. The second photo is a portrait of Princess Liliuokalani next to the throne chair in 1886.
