Heres a fairly detailed look at the end-user problem with not having net neutrality regulation. The long and short of it is that because there arent enough companies providing service to the end user normal free-market competition doesnt happen and we get bad service at high prices because the companies that own the last mile are in direct competition with the companies whose data we want. We cant really allow more competition because wed constantly have companies ripping up our streets and yards to lay new cables and such. The solutions are: 1. Force the last mile provider to allow all traffic equal priority and to maintain adequate connectivity between networks. 2. Nationalize the last mile of our communication infrastructure and force the government to do number 1. Personally, I think that letting private companies run a regulated network is probably better than trusting that hundreds or thousands of local townships will get it right. But the way things are now, internet providers have regional, unregulated monopolies. They lie to the public about what they do because theyre under no legal obligation to tell the truth. When they sell you a 10Mbps connection, there is nothing making them tell you that that speed is only on their network (which mostly just has other end users on it) and that they will throttle the speeds to other networks (that have the content that you want).
