Heres a festive question for you. Why is Santa Claus so fat? The Santa Claus that we know today; the fat, jolly, bearded and bespectacled Christmas symbol. Surely the message that obesity is synonymous with cheerfulness and joviality is a bad one. Isnt Santa supposed to be a role model for kids. Maybe his gut busting is from eating all those snacks that parents leave out for him. A mince pie and a whiskey toddy when I was kid. Well, thats what my Dad wanted anyway. But... Santa Claus wasn’t always fat. In fact, the inspiration for Santa, St. Nicholas, was actually a thin man. It was Moore, an Episcopal minister famous for the 1822 poem “An Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas,” who gave Santa his generous waistline. Moore wrote the poem, more commonly known as “’Twas the Night Before Christmas,” for his three daughters. Google it; its a good one. It was that poem that cartoonist Thomas Nast took as inspiration for his drawing of Santa Claus as a rotund figure with a white beard and holding toys for children. Nast is also given credit for associating Santa with his North Pole workshop, elves, and Mrs. Claus. Next thing we know Coca-Cola are dominating the media and acting as if they invented the guy. Although, drink enough Coca-Cola and eat enough McDonalds youre gonna look like him anyway. But, the question still remains. Why do we continue to push this gluttonous image? Because we are all supposed to eat too much at Christmas? No, I dont buy it!
