Heres a good example of my process. If you can get beyond the singing. Other than the acoustic guitar that I used to map out the basic structure I dont think I planned any of the other parts. Theres probably around 15 different guitars parts to this one. And I wouldnt have anything in mind even up to the point of pressing record.I found this gave me the freshest takes. After that its all about the editing, layering and mixing. The basic process was to lay down the acoustic guitars first. Then build the midi tracks around that. The rest of the guitars come right at the end of recording the backing track. Not having a band to jam with I couldnt really bounce ideas around. So in the end Id just try to keep the guitars as live as possible....first reacting to the the built up backing track but subsequently call and response with the previous take. I liked to take my time mixing and layering. A basic rough mix would take a day. And after a bit of a break away, the final mixing could take anything from another day (like this one) to two weeks for something like Somebody Hold Me, where I had to juggle up to 60 guitar parts.
