Heres a good thought exercise for a pure resource based economic venture - one which cannot afford to be anything less. The prospect of launching a second planetary civilisation within the solar system - on Mars. The red planet is a logical base from which to operate a mining operation in the asteroid belt. If we can mine millions of tons of valuable construction materials from ores that are already in space, then this saves us the colossal expense of having to launch them into space from Earth. And when we can engineer in space on that scale, we can start to build out a global energy capture and industrial base that will remove the need to base those space-consuming structures on Earth.
