Heres a great service tip from Fairbanks Chevy Service Manager Robert Kramer: Staying Inflated with Nitrogen Customers often notice the green caps on the tires of new Chevy’s and ask what the big deal is about nitrogen filled tires. “Why nitrogen? What makes it better?” Here’s the answer: nitrogen is an inert gas, meaning it is property free and non-reactive. While oxygen filled tires lose pressure monthly through permeation, nitrogen filled tires are roughly 4 times the size of oxygen molecules and do not permeate so tires lose no pressure from month to month. Why is that important? Consider that if you drive on air filled tires, you may lose 1-3 PSI every month. Within just a short period you, without refilling, you will eventually be driving on under-inflated tires. Under-inflated tires wear much faster than properly inflated tires because low pressure distorts the tires shape and causes “rolling resistance” and grinding on the sides of the tread contact area. Running under-pressurized by just 3-4 psi can diminish your tires usable life by 25%. Cold weather? Did you know that tire pressures change approximately 1 pound for every 10 degrees of temperature change? In Fairbanks, that could amount to 7 to 10 pounds of tire pressure loss from September to November alone!! Nitrogen is much more stable, and will greatly reduce this huge safety issue. Under-inflation is also the leading cause of tire failure, and this is a serious safety issue. If you notice a loss or delay in steering, pulling to one side or the other or other control problems while driving, it is important to check tire pressure immediately and refill to specified levels. Finally, under-inflated tires cause significant loss of mileage economy, meaning you are more likely to need to fill up more often. At Chevrolet, Buick, GMC of Fairbanks, all new car and truck tires are filled with nitrogen and we offer nitrogen refills for any make or model for just $49.95, and during October buy any set of 4 tires and we’ll fill them with nitrogen for just $24.95!
