Heres a letter that my Mom sent to her friends and family after attending the school board meeting: Hello Everyone, I just wanted to share the information that I received at last night’s school board meeting: At the Special Session School Board meeting last night the board voted to approve a 6.95 mil levy that will be on the ballot this November 4th. There was a presentation made that showed facts and figures and details about what this levy really means to our district (see attached). There are several very important and much needed services that support student achievement and growth at all levels that could be restored if the levy passes that are all outlined in the attached presentation. In addition to these services the participation fees would be lowered for THIS SCHOOL YEAR. The fees would be as follows: Athletics: $276 (3 payments and family cap of $800) Band & Drill Team: $185 Cheer: $125 Clubs, Chorus & Band (Jr. High): $55 Obviously if the levy passes in November it will be after the Fall season has finished. School administration said this would be handled by giving a voucher credit for the difference (over-payment) that could be used towards school fees, future participation fees, lunch accounts, etc… The information was very thorough and had many interesting facts such as the only 2 districts around that have not passes a levy for new operating money since 2005 is Huber Heights and Trotwood. The term “mil” was also explained in that the money a 6.95 mil levy in Huber Heights generates is equivalent to a 2.78 mil for Centerville Schools and a 50.34 mil for Jefferson Schools. Understandably, there are those that have very strong opinions and are firm in their decision to cast a NO vote. The goal is to make sure we get accurate information out to those that are trying to decide and have a true desire to gather information and make an informed decision when they go to cast their vote. We also hear a lot that the reason the levy isn’t passing is because of the renters and elderly in our community. Although those issues are sure to play a part in generating some NO votes it appears based on the numbers from the Montgomery County Board of Elections those factors don’t seem to be as much of the problem as they get the attention for. By evaluating the numbers that appear on the August 6, 2013 - Special Election – Election Summary it seems that a majority of the problem is that a large number of the parents that are in our district are not getting out to vote. Huber Heights CSD - Current Operating Expenses Additional 5.95 Total Number of Precincts 28 Precincts Reporting 28 100.0 % Times Counted 5804/28778 20.2 % Total Votes 5791 FOR THE TAX LEVY 2309 39.87% AGAINST THE TAX LEVY 3482 60.13% What can we do to help make a difference? · Get registered to vote if you are not already. Make sure our friends, family, neighbors, etc...know what to do, where to go and the deadlines if they need to get registered. · Stay informed and pass along accurate information. Too many times our community has turned into “Rumor Heights” and wrong has become the sound bite. Attached is a link with information on registering to vote. It will provide information on what you need and where you can go to register. mcohio.org/boe/voter_information/ Also attached is a link that will find your polling location if you are not sure. Simply type in your address and it will tell you where to go cast your vote on Election Day. mcohio.org/boe/voter_information/polling_location_finder.cfm Our community will be faced with 3 very important issues on the ballot including a School Levy, Huber Heights City Earned Income Tax Levy, Montgomery County Human Services Ley as well as a Governor’s Election. How someone votes is a very personal decision and all that we can ask is as people evaluate FACTS they have accurate information in order to make the most informed and best decision for them personally. Please feel free to share this information with your friends, neighbors, concerned parents, etc.
