Heres a letter to the editor from Kim Lawton. If you support this festival, speak up. I for one know that doing business in this town has been a struggle for years. Our community needs to be supporting any economic drivers like this Thanks for speaking up Kim! Come on Penticton. Now is the time. #SupportBoonstock. Imagine being excited about going on holidays. You’re going to a city you’ve never been to before. A city you’ve heard amazing things about. You are excited. You are going. You are packed. You’ve got your tickets. You’ve got your accommodations booked. You’ve got tickets booked for a festival. The festival that inspired you to book this trip in the first place. In the Okanagan, we roll out the welcome mat for triathletes, bridge players, bird-watchers, concert-goers, wine tourists, Elvis fans, rock climbers and sun-seekers. Yes, many of us had concerns about Boonstock 6-months ago. And yes, many of us had concerns even 6 weeks ago. But we’re now just a couple days away. The President, the staff, the board of directors have worked very hard to make sure this new event is a success, despite a whole lot of challenges and obstacles put in their path. Will there be problems? Yes, of course there will be problems. You can’t bring thousands of festival-goers together and not expect problems. You also can’t bring together thousands of bird-watchers or bridge players without problems. It’s not about whether there are problems, it’s about how the problems are handled. Most of us in the area probably know at least one or two of the staff or volunteers or board of directors or sponsors involved in Boonstock. We know they have our best interests at heart. We know they are professional and that they are doing absolutely everything to ensure the event is a success. Let’s embrace the thousands of guests that are coming to Penticton in the coming days. Let’s welcome them. Let’s thank them for coming and supporting our local businesses. Let’s invite them to come back again with other friends and their families. Maybe they will come back every year. Let’s not stand on the sidelines and tally up a list of reasons to say I told you so. Tally up a list of people that you welcomed to the area this weekend. Tally up all of the people you know who are working in a hotel or a grocery store or a restaurant or a winery or brewery where Boonstock guests will spend money. Let’s welcome Boonstock guests and make them feel like they are at home. A home they will cherish just as much as we all do. A home they will want to come back to again and again.
