Heres a little snippet I had to cut from an article Im working on. I may use it in another article later, but in the meantime I thought some of you might find the observation amusing: I used to feel I had to defend the length of Ayn Rands novels, but in the era of Game of Thrones, when authors dont just write thousand-page novels but write whole cycles of thousand-page novels, that hardly seems necessary. And I dont just blame the authors. Its a trend encouraged by the publishing industry, where there is a strong economic incentive to prolong the profitability of a successful work by spinning the story out far beyond what is artistically justified. If Ayn Rand were alive today, her publisher would be clamoring for a sequel set in the same universe as Atlas Shrugged, a phrase certain to set her teeth on edge.
