Heres a look back on the career of former University of Miami All American nose tackle Jim Burt. A native of Orchard Park, NY, Burt was recruited by former Canes head coach Lou Saban. Saban first discovered Burt while he was coaching the Buffalo Bills. At the time, Burt attended high school with Sabans daughter. Another high school classmate was former UM offensive lineman and professional wrestler Larry Pfohl (Lex Luger). During his time at Miami, Burt was one of the strongest linemen to ever play for the Canes. His 177 career solo tackles is still the most by a nose tackle or defensive tackle in UM history. Burts career flourished under new head coach Howard Schnellenberger in 1979 and was one of many All American defensive linemen developed by assistant coach Harold Allen. As a senior in 1980, Burt made one of the biggest plays of the season when he knocked down a 2-point conversion pass to preserve a 10-9 victory over Florida State. He helped the Canes to a 9-3 record and was named defensive MVP of the 1980 Peach Bowl against Virginia Tech. Despite an outstanding college career, he was undrafted by the NFL. Burt signed as a free agent with the New York Giants in 1981 and went on to an outstanding pro career, starting for two Super Bowl championship teams-- 1986 with the Giants and 1989 with the 49ers. His son Jim Jr. later played baseball for the Canes and was a member of the 2001 College World Series national championship team. . . https://youtube/watch?v=wtxy2yJcAIA
