Heres a real Halloween treat for you, Monster Kiddies! I captured - TopicsExpress

Heres a real Halloween treat for you, Monster Kiddies! I captured this entire episode of the DINAH SHORE SHOW on the Jewish Life TV channel (DirecTV) this morning, and watched the best parts again with great pleasure: Dinahs guest stars are BORIS KARLOFF, ART CARNEY, BETTY HUTTON and the SKYLARKS, and the centerpiece is a monstrous spoof of the show itself imagining that Dinah takes a vacation, leaving Borry Karloff and his All-Ghoul Orchestra to host the Shiverolet Show as her summer replacement! This 10 minute section of the show I just found posted on YouTube captures the heart of the show (though there are a few other bits with Boris missing), and its sharper and less dupey than the complete show I watched on JLTV: dailymotion/video/xe57d_boris-karloff-dinah-shore-sing_fun Things get rolling good about 3 minutes in, with the Shiverolet Show spoof beginning just after 5 minutes: Borry belts out the then-current Calypso hit Mama Look A Boo Boo and then joins Art, Betty and Dinah as his All-Ghoul Orchestra to do a very funny version of the vintage hit single Little Darlin. Though Boris had been a horror movie icon for years, and had often played for laughs in movies and radio and television shows, it would seem likely that the inspiration for this fabulous nonsense was the late-50s monster boom caused by the highly successful syndication of a big package of old Universal horror films to TV stations all over the country. There are visuals in the spoof to support this notion: Boris has his hair parted in the middle, and is formally attired and handling macabre props like some of the big city TV horror hosts; Art Carney seems to be made up to resemble the Shock host Marvin in Chicago; Dinah and Betty are both wearing slinky goth ensembles and have dark straight hair like Vampira, the west coast hostess Tarantula Ghoul, and other late-night glamor ghouls. And all of these horror hosts received national attention (unlike many others in the country) in major publications like TV Guide, Life and the Saturday Evening Post... ... the only trouble is, none of those articles had been published, and none of those hosted shows (except the pioneering Vampira Show, several years earlier) were on the air yet when this episode of the Dinah Shore Show first aired on May 17, 1957! I dont know what to think about it! So Ill just scratch my head and marvel at the wonderfulness of it all.... hope you like it too.
