Heres a shock, I have something to say… For those of you that are making disparaging remarks concerning the death of Robin Williams… I myself am somewhat upset by the medias coverage of his death-because theyre not telling the whole story. his death is sad and tragic, on so many levels. He was too young to go and its even sadder that it was at his own hand. However he suffered from a mental illness. And this is where the media has dropped the ball. Bipolar disorder is a serious disease. Its as serious as schizophrenia maybe more so because in my experience its more widespread. He wasnt suffering from garden-variety depression. Mood swings with bipolar disorder are extreme. Its more than just a roller coaster ride. And unfortunately the general public does not/can not understand the extreme highs and lows these people experience in their lives. There are no pills that can fix it there are no magic formulas to make it go away there are no surgeries that can cut it out. It is a lifetime illness that takes a lifetime maintenance. This is not a disease that is caused by anything that anyone does to themselves, and its not a disease that is preventable. If you have family friends or loved ones that are victims of this disease then you have a small concept of what they go through, but no one can truly understand the disease unless they live with it. Unfortunately with mental illness there still the stigma that has been attached for centuries, so we hide it in the closet and we dont let anyone in because there is still (sadly) shame attached to a psychiatric diagnosis. Im upset with the media because they are saying the Robin Williams battled with depression. Yes he battled with depression but its so much more than that.... I cant say and wont say that I condone suicide, however I can appreciate the extreme struggle that the man fought daily. I can appreciate the helplessness that he felt. And I can somewhat understand the frustration of never being in control..... Women can imagine the emotional mood swings that come with pregnancy, or menopause times 100 and they might have some concept- but this is a lifetime of that not just a few months or year... My point is once again until you walk a mile in another mans shoes....stop the hate, and the judgements, and appreciate what he left behind. And if you cant do that and just keep it to yourself.
