Heres a small request to all the people out there doing the ALS - TopicsExpress

Heres a small request to all the people out there doing the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Im not going to question your motives - maybe youre going it for fun or maybe you really care about this disease. Maybe the likes you could possibly get are your biggest motivator. All of this is besides the point. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is raising money for about 30,000 people suffering from ALS in the USA. It makes sense for the Americans to do this considering the amount of money that is contributed to other more widespread diseases in the country. They can afford to focus on the relatively smaller problems their country faces. But why are we Indians so proudly embracing this? We have kids who have no access to regular meals or drinking water (I wont even mention an education here, considering Maslows hierarchy). We have old living on the streets because they have outlived their usefulness. We have myriad diseases caused by lack of sanitation. I can go on and on and on but Im sure you get the point. If we really want to make a difference, lets focus on the larger problems plaguing this country. Donate to education or sanitation or old age homes or orphanages or free health centers. If you want to support prevention of a disease, support Tuberculosis. It is responsible for 10% of the deaths due to diseases in this country! So its up to you to choose - let your $100 go towards helping less than 1 person in the States, or helping 10 underprivileged kids here back home. Choose wisely.
