Heres a snippet from what Ive been working on today. Mason had picked it up which could only mean he knew who was on the other end. Most of the calls were screened, leaving the multitude of telemarketers nowhere else to get a hold of us. I only knew of a few families that still had land lines. I kept ours so the kids could reach us. I got up and headed to the living room. “I’m turning it on right now.” I entered as Mason turned the channel. I looked and watched, stunned as the White House was engulfed in flames. The camera man turned and panned across our nation’s capital. It was on fire. The view switched and another camera showed Congress in flames. Chaos was apparent as screams filled the air. There werent enough fire departments to go around. If they could even get there with the amount of people in the streets. I sank on the couch, watching in horror as Mason talked on the phone. A knock on the back door announced Ted and Mary before they walked in. Close neighbors and friends we had known each other for years. Ted was the hunter in the neighborhood. I waved them in and they sat, watching the seat of our government burn. Mason hung up the phone. “It was terrorists.” He sounded like he was in shock. I don’t know why he was surprised. We had watched New York burn when terrorists had attacked many years ago. “Who was on the phone?” “Luke.” “Where is he?” “There. He’s in Washington D.C. on leave. He’s with Ellie. They had planned their leave to coincide to sight see.” “Are they safe?” “How can they be safe? Look at what’s happening.” “What did Luke say?” I tried not to sound exasperated. “His leave was revoked, Ellie’s too. When his command found out he was in D.C. they sent him and Ellie to check in at the local base. They are both in the thick of things.” Mason sounded distraught. I knew he loved our children as much as I did. The news tightened my gut and took my breath away. “They’ll survive.” Ted said. “I know those two. They’ll be just fine.” “Maybe Luke will get assigned with John. He’s stationed in D.C.” Mary reached out and gripped my hand. “They will all look out for each other. They always have.” She was right. If they ended up together they would have each other to depend on. I nodded in agreement unable to think to speak. Another knock on the door heralded the entry of another set of neighbors. “God, did you see the news?” Elise tripped into the room, energy swirling about her. He husband Jerry followed slowly behind. She plopped down next to me with a hug, while Jerry carefully shook everyone’s hand. “Terrible business.” Jerry shook his head. “Just terrible.” “Has anyone claimed doing this?” Mason asked as he looked around. “Iran.” Ted was scanning his phone checking out the latest updates. “Along with ISIS and the Taliban.” We all sat in silence, watching Washington burn.
