Heres a truth thats a little uncomfortable for some: there is light and there is darkness within each of us. As Ive grown older, Ive learned there are two powerful steps to freedom in anyones life: 1) recognizing and allowing that both do exist within you; 2) realizing that whichever you choose to feed -- the light or the darkness -- is what will ultimately compel your actions. Why does this matter? Because it is your actions that determine what you become. Every morning I wake up, Im thankful to be alive. Grateful for another day. I consciously choose to feed the light each and every morning, and throughout the day. Its why I try to choose to post only positive and helpful messages on Facebook, for example; why I focus on how I can help my employees be better, every single day. And it even drives renewed passion for the mission behind my work: moving markets forward. And while the darkness is always there, I acknowledge it instead of ignoring it or minimizing it -- that side of me is only allowed to roam when Im in the weight room, where I can crush my fears, insecurities, and anger rather than find myself consumed by them. Learning this has enabled an incredible amount of discipline in my life -- its also made me extremely grateful for what I do, what I have, and the people in my life. Nothing gets taken for granted and I can only hope that when all is said and done, my actions will have reflected my focus on the light in my life. Sometimes people ask me why I dont take a day off from the gym, telling me I should rest. My answer: because I need that time every day to find my center. To be able to focus on what really matters in my life. Where do you find your center? What do you choose to focus on, and how is that driving your actions?
