Heres an email I received tonight. Seems VERY convenient since they were just invited to our STOP COMMON CORE Forum for Wednesday. I would encourage all parents available to attend and bring your knowledge so we can battle the BS they will spoon feed the parents. Dear Parents/Guardians: The Unadilla Valley Central School District will hold at Parents Night from 6-7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18 in the auditorium to help parents understand the shifts happening in both English Language Arts and math related to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Teachers and administrators will be on hand to make presentations, answer parents’ questions, and show a sample lesson that includes learning objectives. The question and answer portion of the night will focus on homework and how parents can help their child. We want to help all of our parents understand the shifts happening in our classrooms and we will offer suggestions on how to help with their child’s homework and how to help students succeed. CCSS establishes common education standards throughout the nation, ensuring that all children—regardless of geography, socioeconomic status, or life history—have an equal opportunity an equal opportunity for an education that will prepare them to go to college or enter the workforce. These standards—which are the knowledge and skills that students need to master in order to be prepared for college and/or the workforce—represent shifts or changes in education. Under CCSS, there are 12 shifts: Six in English Language Arts and six in math. The six ELA shifts include: • Read more non-fiction; • Learn about the world by reading; • Read more challenging material; • Talk about reading using evidence gathered from the material read; • Learn how to write based on what was read; • Learn more vocabulary words. The six math shifts include: • Build on concepts learned in the previous grade level; • Spend more time on fewer concepts; • Develop speed and accuracy in solving problems; • Really understand math concepts; • Know how to use it in real-world situations; • Prove mathematics knowledge by showing step-by-step how problems were solved. We look forward to seeing you on Nov. 18. Sincerely, Robert Mackey Superintendent
