Heres an excellent article that will remind us in years to come of the role played by big business in the referendum campaign and of how that role was facilitated by the press and the BBC with their uncritical reporting of it. Did any reporter or journalist ever - ever, once - ask RBS or Standard Life how much it would cost them (and, so, their shareholders, to whom they owe a legal duty) to relocate any actual functions from Scotland to London? In, say, redundancy and unfair dismissal claims, recruitment fees to hire replacements, associated legal and consultancy fees, increased office and other accommodation costs, having to pay staff at London rates and so on and so on? Or to explain exactly why all that enormous, extra cost could possibly be justified? Or to explain precisely and clearly what they were actually saying they would do if there was a Yes vote? Not if there was no currency union, or if some bizarrely draconian regulation was brought in by a new Scottish Government. Just, simply, if there was a Yes vote? Why not? Its a basic question that would be asked by anyone wanting to test the credibility of the claim. The fact that big business might - just might - be looking after its own interests by seeking a No vote was never even hinted at. Anyway, this article reminds us of who they were and what they said. I for one do not want to forget either of those things.
