Manchester United: Where it all went wrong It all started when Moyes first arrived to Old Trafford. Moyes first major decision was to remove the old back room staff and replace it with his own from Everton. It’s a positive move for Moyes however for the players it’s not so glossy. Changing the back room staff has a major effect on players and it’s like having a new boss for your work; you won’t have the same relationship and may suffer from demotivation, which is what has caused Uniteds initial major problems. Then came the summer transfer window where United could have got world-class players but due inactivity from the newly appointed Ed Woodward they failed miserably on all fronts. As the changes in the back room staff already played a role in the fall of United; they only managed to sign Marouane Fellaini on the very last day. Had they signed any of the several world-class players they supposedly had their eyes on, they would have not seen such a poor performance in league and domestic cups. It then came to November 10 2013 where it had seemed like United had overcome the lack of signings and problems with new staff with a 1-0 win over league leaders Arsenal, courtesy of old Gunner Robin van Persie. United were just three points from 2nd. Then terrible news; due to the international break United were hit with injuries, losing midfield ace Michael Carrick and the previous match winner Van Persie. This then led to a 2-2 draw to Cardiff. It was from there where it all began to fall apart, seeing a 2-2 draw to Tottenham and suffering home defeats to Everton and Newcastle. Moyes and Woodward were now to get a second chance to get fresh blood in at Old Trafford in the January transfer window. Throughout the transfer window there was much speculation that United were very close to signing someone or that a star player could leave. However the entire window was just as stale for United as the last one, with the exception of the last minute capture of Chelseas Juan Mata. The plot twist is that this signing was supposedly made by the man himself Sir Alex Ferguson and a member of the old back room staff David Gill, meaning once again Woodward was inactive. Now United see themselves 7th and 12 points behind 4th place Manchester City who have two games in hand, meaning their dreams of finishing in the top four have been destroyed. Manchester United meet Greek side Olympiakos, can Moyes give the Old Trafford faithful something to sing about?
