Heres another Review of our new album Slingshooting Dead Seahorses courtesy of Teela Jay Bryant Finally! An alternative rock band who show exactly what alt. rock is supposed to be!Black Elephant’s sound is both individual and full of hooks - making them listener friendly, whilst remaining unique. You can tell just what a talented group of musicians they all are by listening to just a single one of their tracks, and they know how to show to their talent without over-compensating – something that many of this generation of bands need to take note of. In Black Elephant fashion, this album is innovative and a pleasure to listen to. The band manage to show their best qualities without coming across as cocky or over-complicating anything – this album is something that everyone needs to experience. The intro to Slingshooting Dead Seahorses (entitled Oppenheimer) is very atmospheric, and gives you an idea of what to expect from the rest on the album – especially when paired with the second song on the album, Furnace the Pheasant. The two songs flow nicely together, have great dynamics – something that every musician listening can appreciate! – and definitely manage to keep you very interested in hearing the rest of Slingshooting! Something that becomes very noticeable in the rest of the songs is that Black Elephant are very good at what they do. There are sing-along-inducing hooks in almost every song, which is something that works very well in making this album’s individuality even better. One thing in particular that I cannot allow myself to fail to mention and praise about the songs featured on this album are the bass lines! It is so refreshing to hear bass lines that are prominent, but at the same times work so well with the other instruments (so credit does have to be given to the other musicians too, for getting such a tight sound without any one instrument being too dominant or too recessive!). There is a lovely flow of energy throughout, but there is one song in particular that I do feel the need to mention – that song being Inner Circles. The energy levels wave up and down at a fitting pace throughout Slingshooting Dead Seahorses, and this song is probably the pinnacle, and is my admitted favourite off of the album. There are elements to this song that put Biffy Clyro in my mind (which is NEVER a bad thing!), but there is still that Black Elephant stamp on the song. Black Elephant have truly outdone themselves with this album – if you haven’t already, then you NEED to listen to Slingshooting Dead Seahorses in order to understand the brilliance that is the distinct sound of Black Elephant! Some of the songs are a little edgy with their individuality, but as part of this album they work.Good luck topping this one with your next album guys!
