Heres another tune from the new record -- Ive shared this one - TopicsExpress

Heres another tune from the new record -- Ive shared this one lots, as it was released as the first single a couple of months before the record. But what I havent talked about was how this song evolved, so Im gonna do that now! This one was written after I thought the record was mostly finished. The initial line Ive always loved the summer, you know, even though I tend to burn, popped into my head on the way to visit my parents in NC, and as soon as it did I knew I needed to finish it stat, and I knew it just had to go on the record. That first line is also probably one of the most autobiographical lines of the record, BUT -- this is another one that people keep chalking up to being a relationship song, and its really not! I recorded all of this one at Rob Dysons Wizkid Sound Studio here in Atlanta. Of all the songs on Close to the Sun, I think I had the clearest vision about how I wanted this one to end up, at least in terms of where I wanted things to peak and then diminish again. I even plotted this out on paper for Rob to follow. I knew from the first rough mix that this one was going to go places I had never considered, thanks to all the additional players on it. But what I really loved about this one was Mike Romans piano. What started as a simple singer-songwriter tune ended up going the way of The National, at least to my ears, thanks to that piano part. Throughout the mixing process, I kept telling Rob, MORE MIKE! WHY DO YOU HATE MIKE?!? (kidding. sort of.) I just loved his piano THAT MUCH. Kendra Rainey also added a very short and subtle trumpet part but its so essential in that it elevates that little bridge thats almost a chorus and really separates it from the rest of the song. OH, and this song also won a songwriting contest! But Ive talked about that before. And Ive rambled on too long this morning and need to get ready for work. So, if you havent heard it, here it is!
