Heres hoping we can get to the bottom of this once and for all. Democratic Alliance media statement by Mbali Ntuli, MPL DA KZN Spokesperson on Education DA welcomes KZN matric cheating probe 12 January 2015 Release: Immediate THE Democratic Alliance welcomes the start of an official probe into claims of cheating during Grade 12 final exams at several KZN schools – a scandal that has threatened to further damage the credibility of our province’s Matric results. This is not the first time that the KZN Education department has been placed in the spotlight when it comes to cheating during examinations. The DA expects KZN Education MEC Peggy Nkonyeni and her department to take a more proactive stand - to keep launching investigations after the fact is not good enough. The MEC must deal harshly with offenders, in particular repeat offenders, along with those schools known for cheating in order to put an end to this problem once and for all. We also expect her to instruct her department to include an in-depth investigation into how cheating takes place every year and assess the weaknesses in the entire process from teachers to officials. Most importantly, the MEC and her department to educate both learners and employees of the department on the consequences of cheating and the impact it will have on their lives. Cheating not only disadvantages learners, they also run the risk of thinking that hard work is not needed to succeed in life and that cheating is an easier option. This is a lesson that learners in KZN and South Africa can do without. The DA will await the conclusion of the investigation on the 30th of January with great anticipation. We also look forward to seeing those pupils cleared of any wrongdoing being able to continue with their lives. Media Enquiries: Mbali Ntuli, MPL
