Heres my notes for my sermon on 10-5-14 “You” can’t change “me” I nursed you with milk, as a mother would feed her baby, because you were not, and still are not, developed enough to digest complex spiritual food. -1 Corinthians 3 :2 (VOICE) Key Verse: His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. -2 Peter 1:3-9 (NIV) Moral Excellence -Being a good person doesn’t mean you are saved. -By who’s standard do we follow moral excellence? -We are sinners… empowered by the Holy Spirit. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. -2 Corinthians 5:20-21 (NIV) Knowledge -You need to know you Bible… but knowing the Word doesn’t mean you know who Jesus is. -Christians who become lukewarm, end up arguing over knowledge than working on their relationship with God. I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars; and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have not become weary. Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. -Revelation 2:1-4 (NKJV) Self-Control and Patient Endurance -Your emotions are the most unstable part of you. -If you have to feel right to do right… then you are a child. -The heart must be tempered by your mind, and your mind must be guided by the heart. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; now that I have become a man, I am done with childish ways and have put them aside. -1 Corinthians 13:11 (AMP) Godliness and Brotherly Affection -I’ll withhold from you, unless you change. -Guilt and manipulation -You’ll hide your faults on other people’s faults. -You can’t hide your faults in God, because God has no faults -You can’t change people… God changes people. If you judge other people, then you will find that you, too, are being judged. Indeed, you will be judged by the very standards to which you hold other people. Why is it that you see the dust in your brother’s or sister’s eye, but you can’t see what is in your own eye? Don’t ignore the wooden plank in your eye, while you criticize the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eyelashes. That type of criticism and judgment is a sham! Remove the plank from your own eye, and then perhaps you will be able to see clearly how to help your brother flush out his sawdust. -Matthew 7:1-5 (VOICE) Love This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us. -1 John 1:5-10 (NIV) “you” can’t change “Me” -God does not work by dominus … He works by agape. -God does not restrain you… God constrains you. -God doesn’t stop you, God sets limits that you choose to, or not to cross. -It is the love of God that draws us to change, because any change that is imposed by force against you own will, causes you to resent the one who trying to make you change. -You are modifying behavior to be in relationship, but the change is not genuine. -Your change isn’t a sacrifice to God to gain His approval. -God loved you and saved you knowing you have sin. -Denying this means you saying that God is a liar. -I met the love of God before I met the God of love. “God says to us, ‘I want to start here by Understanding that I loved you without change. Christ came for you while you were yet a sinner, that I did not threaten you into change. I did not withdraw from you, because you wouldn’t change. And, the reason that I don’t is because of the enormity of my sacrifice.’ God said, ‘It cost Me too much to be in relationship with you, for Me to harm that relationship by trying to manipulate and control you, and overpower you into changing, when I have decided to love you into changing.’ But, just to be clear, God says, ‘You are not changing for Me.’” -Pastor Michael Pitts I Will… -Your will is ridged… everyone is a little bit stubborn. -At some point, you got to get your “will” involved, and understand that whatever change you make is not to please God, but because it is the right think to do. -You don’t have to feel it to do it. I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. -Psalm 34:1 (NKJV) I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High. -Psalm 9:2 (NKJV) I will love You, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be saved from my enemies. -Psalm 18:1-3 (NKJV) The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked came against me to eat up my flesh, My enemies and foes, they stumbled and fell. Though an army may encamp against me, My heart shall not fear; though war may rise against me, In this I will be confident. -Psalm 27:1-3 (NJKV) Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever. -Psalm 23:6 (NKJV) When You said, “Seek My face,” My heart said to You, “Your face, Lord, I will seek.” -Psalm 27:8 (NKJV)
