Heres my opinion with the ongoing police presence at the protests on Burnaby Mountain. Im seeing a lot of signs there saying that the RCMP are simply the enemy and that theyre thugs. Well, theyre not, its Kinder Morgan that we are protesting against, not the police. Police brutality is a serious subject and we should all be mindful of it, but what our main goal for this protest, is to say no to the expansion of oil exports to an already polluting country; China. The smog is so thick there at times, that people have begun having respiratory issues. When we protest against people that are just doing their jobs enforcing an injunction from a judge, it distances ourselves from the ongoing fight against Kinder Morgan. In the end, if we keep believing the cops are somehow representatives of Kinder Morgan, we will loose our credibility, and loose the fight. We may not like that were being held back by law enforcement, but the truth is, it was the injunction supporting Kinder Morgan, and the approval from that judge, that we should be disagreeing with. We can be angry about the riots Ferguson, but thats another issue to protest against, and an entirely different topic. Now with that being said, I have seen some rather shocking acts of force from the RCMP, I dont excuse or defend those actions, but that should all be discussed without the influence of Kinder Morgan, it should be discussed under the topic of police brutality, not with the notion that the RCMP are somehow all in agreement that the Kinder Morgan pipeline should be built. Im sure a fair amount of RCMP officers dont want the pipeline built either, but they have no choice but to listen to the orders given to them with regards to the injunction. I find that some people tend to seize the opportunity to protest against the police in these scenarios, there are many places to protest against police brutality, but environmental protests like the one on Burnaby Mountain should be purely focused on just that, the preservation of our ecosystems.
