Heres my rant for the day. Ladies, if you want to compete in a bikini, fitness or physique comp, PLEASE do your research on your coach. Im hearing tales of coaches putting girls on insanely low calorie diets and then set them to over training with shitloads of cardio and not enough fuel to maintain the muscle they worked so hard for in off season. Basically it is overworking and STARVING them just to get lean enough for stage. That is not lean, it is SKINNY! Living on chicken, broccoli and 3 tbs of olive oil is NOT a healthy diet. Some of you may argue oh but those comps arent healthy, which is true NOW. Years ago these comps were about the girls (and guys) who had the best overall musculature/shape whilst looking FIT and HEALTHY. It is a FITNESS competition NOT a beauty pageant! Myself and partner Tony Attridge train both men and women for these comps regularly, and our clients dont have a slack off season, they maintain a healthy, balanced diet all the time and just change up a little in preparation for a comp. There is NO starvation and NO rebound post comp. The reason for this? We keep them well nourished and fueled with appropriate nutrients so they dont crave sugar and chocolate and want to gorge immediately after they get off stage. Our clients also train at an appropriate intensity and at appropriate intervals. These radical over training and under eating methods simply lead to muscle loss and even worse EATING DISORDERS. The number of women I know who have or have had an ED without being a competitor is PHENOMINAL, let alone adding to the numbers by encouraging women to flog their bodies and be overly critical. My point? I said it at the start. If you want to compete, research your coaches. Dont just train with someone who has won a comp themselves, look for someone educated in training AND nutrition not just someone who is taking a one-size fits all approach. It doesnt work. Rant over!
