Heres my take on religion. Some people say it is the problem but I dont think so. If you read Karen Armstrong and other authors like her, you find that all the religions have at the heart a sense of compassion and love for the other. Jesus said Love your enemy. and Hillel said standing on one leg Dont do to others what you would not have done to you. Islam has similar precepts. I know atheists and agnostics who hold to the same principles. So I dont think it is religion that is the problem. I think it is people not adhering to the precepts and fundamental beliefs of their religion. One excuse I heard is that it was too hard to love your enemy so you dont have to do it. I do not believe that to be true...we are human but we must try to follow these high principles and if we fall short of achieving them, then work harder at sticking to them. It is only through love and compassion and embracing the different, the other, that we will achieve a lasting and peaceful world.
