Heres my thoughts on Common Core & the new way of teaching... I - TopicsExpress

Heres my thoughts on Common Core & the new way of teaching... I went to Es school for math night last night. After speaking with the teachers the most common phrase that they all said was we didnt have time to complete that lesson in class. Well, if the teachers didnt have time to teach it...why are the kids being tested on it? Often times the teachers are relying on the parents to google, youtube, math web site the answers to these study guides. I dont mind helping my child with a question or two. I do not appreciate having to come home from an 8 hour work day, like the rest of the world, and having to sit down and do 3 hours of homework with my child...most of which is class work that the teacher didnt have time to get to, or teach. I even had a teacher tell me that she does not go over all of the math homework with the kids.. she does not have time to check the answers and let them know if their homework is right or wrong. Here I am, guessing at these crazy math equations trying to solve them...and then I wait for my son to return home from school the following day with the correct answers so I can see if I was right or wrong.. and the teacher didnt have time to review them? How am I supposed to help him when neither of us know the answers? Often times he has a blank study guide, because the teacher didnt have time to give them the answers...and, their test will be in a day or two. Often times his teacher is absent and the substitute whos giving the test is not as prepared to explain whats expected, or prepared to answer the questions. I can go on and on about other things I witnessed last night.... Common Core is supposed to teach them about the real world....but HELLO? ... in the real world if you are not able to finish your job within your 8 hour work day or 40 hour work week, then you would be in some sort of trouble with your boss, or whomever. So why are these teachers not following this real world timeline? IF they cant get the job done during the week, then the kids should not be tested on that material. OR, the teacher should spend 3 hours at home each night completing unfinished work (like anyone in the real world would do if they didnt finish their job) & not rely on the parents to spend 3 hours each night completing unfinished class work (we already completed our 8 hour work day!! We didnt ask our clients to finish it for us!!) Now, before all of my teacher friends go crazy on me after reading this...Im not saying that youre NOT doing your job.. I am saying that this new way of school totally sucks & that you guys have a lot of extra material that youve got to teach the kids in a much shorter time frame. I get it!! I understand your frustration. It must be really hard for all of you. However, its not okay for me to finish teaching every subject, every study guide & every thing else Every NIGHT! If it doesnt get done in class.. Then we should NOT be tested on it. **IF you paid attention throughout this paragraph.. Im sure youve noticed 100 grammar mistakes (and more..).. I suck at this kinda stuff, do you really want ME teaching my child? I need a real teacher to teach him. I am professional google-er.. thats how I get by in life. HE needs to learn from you guys. NOT me :(
