Heres new info for a new Scooby-Doo movie which will be animated and being released in theaters. New Scooby-Doo Movie in the Works and Headed To The Big Screen A brand new Scooby-Doo animated movie is reportedly in the works over at Warner Bros. Instead of going straight-to-video, this one should arrive in theaters. The lovable pooch and his crime-fighting partners are certainly no stranger to the world of feature films. The gang appeared in two live-action flicks that were scripted by Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn. The films have earned over $450 million worldwide. Since the franchise is still making quite a bit of money through several TV movies and direct-to-video releases, Warner Bros. is hoping a full-blown theatrical Scooby-Doo animated flick will rake in a lot of cash at the box office. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of information about the project floating around the internet as of this writing. Although writer Matt Lieberman has been tapped to script the flick, a director hasn’t been announced just yet. Charles Roven and Richard Suckle will produce the flick for Atlas World Wrestling Entertainment - WWE while Jesse Ehrman will oversee the Scooby-Doo movie for Warner Bros. Besides this behind-the-scenes info, that’s all the news that’s fit to print right now. Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, and the gang have appeared in 20 different feature-length direct-to-video films over the past few years. Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island kicked things off in 1998. The studio has released new animated adventures almost every single year since. Scooby-Doo! Stage Fright arrived on home video earlier this month. Back in 2002, Warner Bros released a live-action Scooby-Doo movie that was written by James Gunn (director of Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy) and starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze, Jr, Matthew Lillard, Seth Green, and Alicia Silverstone. The film grossed $275 million worldwide on a budget of $84 million. A sequel was quickly greenlit and released in 2004, but it grossed only $181 million. The studio apparently feels that theres still some money to be made from the franchise, because it is now developing an animated Scooby-Doo movie that will be released in theaters. Matt Lieberman (Short Circuit reboot) is writing the script. Scooby-Doo was created in 1969 by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears. The original animated TV series focused on a group of mystery-solving teenagers, Daphne, Fred, Shaggy, Velma and their cowardly dog, Scooby-Doo. Since then, there have been numerous TV spin-offs and direct-to-video projects, in addition to the two live-action movies. Scooby-Doo, where are you? Over on Cartoon Network, mostly, as the television channel has done a fine job of keeping the franchise modern with a never-ending stream of new series and made for TV animated specials featuring the Mystery Machine gang. But those aren’t bringing in the millions upon millions of dollars that theatrical releases do, and so Warner Bros. is once again going back to the spooky well for another Scooby-Doo feature film, according to Variety, as this will be a fully animated feature. In the last fifteen years, Scooby-Doo has been a part of over 20 direct-to-video features, starting with 1998’s Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (the most recent, Scooby-Doo! Stage Fright, was released last month). Another one is already in the works involving pro wrestlers. There have also been two more live action films, Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins and Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster, but both were obviously made for TV (and takes place before the Scooby-Doo movie in 2002 and Scooby-Doo 2 Monsters Unleashed in 2004). Cartoon Network has produced and aired three different animated series, What’s New, Scooby-Doo?, Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get a Clue! and Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, which ended this past April. This last one is probably the second best animated series following the original Hanna Barbera series, as it’s a more serious affair with horror film homages included.
