Heres one for the historians. In 1933 Italo Balbo, Air Marshall of The Italian Air, Force led a squadron of Italian Air Boats on a trans Atlantic round trip from Italy to Chicago. The first air squadron to complete a trans Atlantic flight. A legendary Italian military leader, he was received by FDR at the White House and spoke to a large Italian immigrant gathering at Madison Square Garden. What is little known is he was hosted by his friend and countryman, my great uncle Sylvester Mattie, in Hornell during this trip. The picture above is Balbo and his pilots being celebrated at the Sherwood Hotel by the local Italians. Photo and History courtesy of Ignatius Mattie.
